ballknowledge vs Poeltl

Poeltl is the NBPA's own official daily NBA guessing game — 8 guesses, color-coded hints on team, position, height, age and jersey number. ballknowledge is an independent fan-built alternative with the same basic idea, unlimited guesses, a wider set of stats behind each score, and a head-to-head mode that sends a specific friend the exact player you just played, to beat your count. Neither is better across the board — they reward slightly different things.

The real difference

Both games start from the same idea — Wordle rules applied to an NBA roster — so the mechanics converge more than they diverge. The categories are one real gap: Poeltl's hints are mostly biographical (team, position, height, age, number), while ballknowledge scores every guess against production stats too — points, rebounds, assists, steals, blocks, shooting splits — so a guess that's statistically close but the wrong player still tells you something useful, not just a string of reds.

The bigger difference is head-to-head: finish any round, tap “Challenge a friend,” and they get a link to that exact player with your guess count attached. It's the one mechanic on this page we haven't found in Poeltl at all.

Who Poeltl is better for

If you want the shorter, higher-stakes version — 8 guesses and it's over, a silhouette hint if you're stuck, and the reassurance of playing the league's own official game — Poeltl is the right choice, and it's a genuinely well-made puzzle.

Who ballknowledge is better for

If you want a puzzle you can't technically lose (unlimited guesses, ranked instead by speed), a richer stat-based signal on every guess, or a reason to actually send the result to a specific friend rather than just posting a grid — that's what ballknowledge is built around.

Poeltl is a product of the National Basketball Players Association. ballknowledge is an independent fan project, not affiliated with or endorsed by the NBPA. Details above reflect Poeltl's own public description of itself as of 2026 — things change, so double-check anything decision-critical directly on their site.
